There is so much more to downsizing than just the physical act of decluttering your home. More often than not, it's the home you've lived in with loved ones for years, sometimes even decades, so there's even more reason to hold onto things and have sentimental feelings towards your belongings. Downsizing for seniors can reveal may emotions and challenges, so we've compiled some tips on how to take on this challenge.
Understand the reason for downsizing
Sometimes, we don't evaluate and understand the reason why we need downsizing. Are there specific pros and cons to this in your specific situation? Do you have a list of items that you know you’d like to keep? It’s always great to have a game plan set in place, even if it’s just the basics. We suggest reviewing all the major things you know you’ll need in your new home like furniture, household appliances, and your everyday items like clothes. From there, you can sort through secondary items like books, wall decorations, and photos.
Get help from family and friends
Downsizing is a huge task, and it’s hard to do it all alone. That’s why we suggest asking for help from family and friends. Telling them about your plan and keeping open communication can help to create a seamless downsizing experience.
Use a sorting system when decluttering
It’s hard to not consider specific belongings meaningful and important. Maybe it’s a piece of art or a handwritten card that you can’t seem to part with, or maybe it’s an item of clothing that you wore on your wedding day, or to a graduation ceremony. Different belongings will have a different meaning to everyone, so there’s no right or wrong way to create a decluttering system.
We suggest assessing your belongings before you start your decluttering process. This will give you the chance to make notes on which items you know you’ll 100% want to get rid of and which you’ll want to keep. After this preliminary assessment of your belongings, you can start sorting through what you’ll keep, donate and sell.
Most importantly, take some time to reminisce!
As we’re sure you know downsizing is a long and emotional task, so why not take some time to reminisce and remember all those fond memories? When you’re sorting through years and years of belongings, a rush of memories can be brought back, both good and bad. This summer Malloway Village will be working on the construction of our pickleball courts that all residents will have access to. Pickleball is a great form of light exercise for individuals of any age and is quite favoured by seniors. [post_content] => In preparation for the social distancing that the Government of Canada has recommended, we've put together a list of things you can implement into your daily life in order to stay as healthy as possible.
Utilize Online Grocery Shopping
We know that grabbing groceries and having a stocked fridge and pantry may be your top priority during this time. We suggest utilizing online grocery shopping services. Whether you’re looking to shop directly with your grocery store of choice like Save-on-Foods or Walmart, or you’re using a third-party website or application, this minimizes your contact with others.
Our top online grocery shopping options are BC211’s Seniors Grocery Shopping, Walmart’s Online Shopping Service, and Save-on-Foods’ Online Shopping. In addition to these, many stores like London Drugs offer the option to order your items online and pick up in-store, which also dramatically reduces your interactions with others.
Spend Time Outdoors, When You Can
Though it’s best to socially distance yourself from the general public, that doesn’t mean you should socially isolate yourself completely! Whether you’re taking a quick walk around the block, or reading a book on the grass at your favourite park, you can still enjoy the outdoors.
Stay Connected with Loved Ones Electronically
In times like this, connecting with friends and family is paramount. It can be an easy way to ease any stresses you may have and can often bring you closer to those you love, even if you aren’t in the same room, city, or country as them. We suggest utilizing online communication tools like Skype or FaceTime to chat with those you care about.
