First, there's the general clutter, things you thought you'd maybe use but never did. Then, there are the everyday items, like your bed, dressers, couches, and TV systems. And then finally, there are the sentimental items. Your kid's school projects, past birthday gifts, photos, cards, you know, all the stuff that you want to keep but don't know where it should go. There is so much more to downsizing than just the physical act of decluttering your home. More often than not, it's the home you've lived in with loved ones for years, sometimes even decades, so there's even more reason to hold onto things and have sentimental feelings towards your belongings. Downsizing for seniors can reveal may emotions and challenges, so we've compiled some tips on how to take on this challenge.

Understand the reason for downsizing

Sometimes, we don't evaluate and understand the reason why we need downsizing. Are there specific pros and cons to this in your specific situation? Do you have a list of items that you know you’d like to keep? It’s always great to have a game plan set in place, even if it’s just the basics. We suggest reviewing all the major things you know you’ll need in your new home like furniture, household appliances, and your everyday items like clothes. From there, you can sort through secondary items like books, wall decorations, and photos.

Get help from family and friends

Downsizing is a huge task, and it’s hard to do it all alone. That’s why we suggest asking for help from family and friends. Telling them about your plan and keeping open communication can help to create a seamless downsizing experience.

Use a sorting system when decluttering

It’s hard to not consider specific belongings meaningful and important. Maybe it’s a piece of art or a handwritten card that you can’t seem to part with, or maybe it’s an item of clothing that you wore on your wedding day, or to a graduation ceremony. Different belongings will have a different meaning to everyone, so there’s no right or wrong way to create a decluttering system. We suggest assessing your belongings before you start your decluttering process. This will give you the chance to make notes on which items you know you’ll 100% want to get rid of and which you’ll want to keep. After this preliminary assessment of your belongings, you can start sorting through what you’ll keep, donate and sell.

Most importantly, take some time to reminisce!

As we’re sure you know downsizing is a long and emotional task, so why not take some time to reminisce and remember all those fond memories? When you’re sorting through years and years of belongings, a rush of memories can be brought back, both good and bad. Having a chance to reflect on your past means having a chance to understand situations from a different point of view with a fresh set of eyes. Looking for the right place to downsize to? Malloway Village offers a variety of beautiful two-bedroom and den floorplans that work for a variety of families and individuals. We’re currently offering private home viewings and virtual tours of our two show homes. You can read all about our show homes here. This summer Malloway Village will be working on the construction of our pickleball courts that all residents will have access to. Pickleball is a great form of light exercise for individuals of any age and is quite favoured by seniors. Pickleball is a paddleball sport that follows similar rules of tennis, badminton and table tennis and can be played in groups of twos or fours, making it an ideal game for couples and neighbours. Malloway Village will also be working on the construction of our RV storage park this summer. With room to park your RV, no matter the size, you’ll have peace of mind knowing your RV is nearby in a safe area that you can visit whenever you need. In addition to the pickleball courts and the RV parking area, Malloway Village also offers a friendly and long-term community for its residents. Not only will you be surrounded by individuals of a similar age, but you’ll be a part of a community of individuals who work to help one another in times of need. Maybe that means picking up the odd grocery item for your neighbour, or lending out a landscaping tool like a shovel, you can rest assured that you’ll be surrounded by a caring and kind community. You’ll find your friendships with your neighbours will flourish when you’re at Malloway Village. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Malloway Village is offering virtual home tours of our two beautifully furnished show homes. But that doesn’t mean searching for your future retirement home has slowed down. Sales are still in full swing with nearly 100 homes sold this passed month in the Chilliwack area. Here at Malloway Village, we understand that real estate remains important to those of you who are on the lookout for your new forever home. We also understand how difficult it is these days for retirees to get out and about for their appointments. That’s why at Malloway Village, we’ve introduced and implemented the option of private home viewings and virtual tours for our two show homes. Our sanitized show homes may be closed to walk-in appointments but they remain open for both private viewings and virtual viewings. We’re taking all the necessary precautions to make sure both our team and our valued clients remain safe during these difficult times. From practicing social distancing during private viewings, to sanitizing our show homes with the utmost care, we’re working hard to make sure your time, whether that’s during an in-person private viewing or virtual viewing, is used efficiently so that you can learn all about Malloway Village and what we have to offer. If you’d like to book an appointment with us, either in-person please book an exclusive appointment with our sales staff to view one of our fully-furnished, sanitized show homes. If viewing from the comfort of your own home is more your style, please book an online showing with Cliff Armstrong, the Malloway Village Sales Manager, and he’ll walk you through the entire show home property. We suggest utilizing online grocery shopping services. Whether you’re looking to shop directly with your grocery store of choice like Save-on-Foods or Walmart, or you’re using a third-party website or application, this minimizes your contact with others.   Our top online grocery shopping options are BC211’s Seniors Grocery Shopping, Walmart’s Online Shopping Service, and Save-on-Foods’ Online Shopping. In addition to these, many stores like London Drugs offer the option to order your items online and pick up in-store, which also dramatically reduces your interactions with others.   Spend Time Outdoors, When You Can Though it’s best to socially distance yourself from the general public, that doesn’t mean you should socially isolate yourself completely! Whether you’re taking a quick walk around the block, or reading a book on the grass at your favourite park, you can still enjoy the outdoors.   Stay Connected with Loved Ones Electronically In times like this, connecting with friends and family is paramount. It can be an easy way to ease any stresses you may have and can often bring you closer to those you love, even if you aren’t in the same room, city, or country as them. We suggest utilizing online communication tools like Skype or FaceTime to chat with those you care about.   These are just a few different ways you can prevent the spread of viruses without completely compromising your day-to-day life. With that being said, it’s always best to review information from Government official so we suggest checking in with what they have to say. You can find helpful information from the Government of Canada here.   [post_title] => How You Can Stay Safe Amid the COVID-19 Outbreak [post_excerpt] => [post_status] => publish [comment_status] => closed [ping_status] => closed [post_password] => [post_name] => how-you-can-stay-safe-amid-the-covid-19-outbreak [to_ping] => [pinged] => [post_modified] => 2020-03-18 11:07:15 [post_modified_gmt] => 2020-03-18 18:07:15 [post_content_filtered] => [post_parent] => 0 [guid] => https://mallowayvillage.ca/?p=8410 [menu_order] => 0 [post_type] => post [post_mime_type] => [comment_count] => 0 [filter] => raw ) [8] => WP_Post Object ( [ID] => 8407 [post_author] => 3 [post_date] => 2020-03-12 14:41:51 [post_date_gmt] => 2020-03-12 21:41:51 [post_content] => Staying organized and on top of your day-to-day life can sometimes be stressful. Whether you’re looking for receipts, bills, a magazine, or an old recipe, sifting through drawers, filing cabinets, and envelopes can cause added stress. Migrating some of that clutter to a smart phone, tablet, or computer can help ease the stress!   First and foremost, having important documents online means they’re all in one place. You can often opt to have receipts sent to your email while shopping and can even ask to have all major bill payments done online. Not only is everything in one place, but using technology also makes it easier to keep track of important things. All of your passwords can be easily saved and kept private from others, leaving you with less stress to write down or remember your password combinations. On top of all that, devices are becoming more and more secure, meaning you don’t have to worry about viruses or online scams.   So, maybe migrating some of your important information to a device sounds right for you, but, how do you get started? We’ve compiled our top five must have apps to get you started on this journey.   Productivity apps Productivity apps are great to keep you more organized. Do you like to write down recipes? Or create weekly grocery lists? Using a productivity app like a notepad allows you to keep all that information in one place. It reduces your physical lists and makes it easier to find things like recipes when you really need them!   Online banking apps Chances are, your bank has an online banking system and standalone app that’s secure and easy to use. Utilizing your banks app makes it even easier to track your day-to-day spending and long-term savings goals. Not only can you review your daily spending but you can also make bill payments directly from your phone. This minimizes your mail intake and clutter, rather than keeping a filing cabinet full of past bills and receipts.   Grocery shopping apps Maybe you don’t often drive, or maybe your week is full of important appointments. Purchasing and scheduling your groceries to be delivered to your house is effortless and easy. By cutting down on valuable time, online grocery shopping and delivery ensures you get the right products to your door quickly and easily.   Loyalty program apps Whether you’re grabbing a coffee on your way into town, or shopping at your local drugstore, there’s probably a loyalty app that you could be using to gain points, and maybe even some free things! Take the Starbucks loyalty program. Not only does their app allow you to collect points, but it also allows you to put your points towards purchases in-store!   Digital magazine subscription apps Reading is a great way to stay on top of things, and having all of your reading materials on your phone, laptop, or tablet is ideal. Digital magazine subscriptions don’t only work well for fashion and lifestyle magazines, but they often will have access to news-based magazines as well. Having everything in one space makes your device the one-stop shop for reading materials. Whether you’re reading during your morning coffee, or during your next vacation, you’ll have everything you need! People move from their family homes in with their kids, to adult living communities or even to other areas of the city. With this change in your life, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t continue to put yourself out there and make connections with others. We gathered together our top five places to meet other retirees in Sardis.   Fitness Groups Joining a fitness group allows you to work on your physical and cognitive health while meeting others who share the same values as you. Meeting others who are also on a fitness journey can be a motivating factor to continue to better yourself. Looking for a fitness centre in Sardis? Why not try the Cheam Leisure Centre.   Creative Groups Joining a creative group can give you the chance to explore your creative side. Maybe you’re interested in joining a drop-in art class, a gardening club or a community choir. Setting aside time each week to get your creative juices flowing might just lead to a new hobby and some new friends! Looking for a creative outlet in Chilliwack? Here’s our favourite: PRISIM Studio   Cooking Classes Have you ever thought of joining a cooking class? Learning from chefs, alongside other curious individuals is a great way to meet people and pick up a new skill! Maybe you’ve always had a passion for food and want to learn more, or maybe you’re interested in food as a hobby. Learning not only how to cook food but about the ingredients used can give you valuable information when it comes to sourcing food for yourself. Looking for a cooking class near you? Why not try Vita Bella Italian Bistro’s classes with Chef Leo?   Community Book Clubs If art classes or cooking classes aren’t your thing, maybe you’ll enjoy joining a book club! It’s one thing to read books yourself but reading books with a group of others who you can gain insightful information from really takes reading to a whole new level. Joining a book club allows you to engage in lively discussions and meet others who have similar interests. The best part? If the book club is organized by a library, the books are often provided by the library for free! Looking for a book club in the Sardis area? Why not try Sardis Library Book Club   Volunteer in Your Community Volunteering is a great way to meet other people and give back to your community at the same time! Whether you’re volunteering to serve food to kids and youth, help out with a community event or keep your community clean, it’s both rewarding and fun. Why not check the City of Chilliwack website for current volunteer opportunities in your area?
