It’s been a busy year here in Chilliwack, and there’s so much more to come in 2024. We can’t wait to tell you what we’ve got planned! As you settle in to enjoy the holidays with your loved ones, we wanted to take a look back at 2023 at Canadian Retirement Developments with you:

Skynest Phase 2

The second phase of our beautiful Skynest development at the corner of Watson and Vedder was completed, ready for residents to move in during the summer…and move in they did! We have many happy new homeowners now living their best lives in their brand new, stunning condos.

There’s still some inventory available, and our fantastic show home is also for sale, so contact us now for more details on how you can join our happy and growing community!

Golf Tournament

Our annual Golf Tournament took place back in July at Cultus Lake Golf Club. It was a great opportunity for residents of Canadian Retirement Developments properties to come together and enjoy a great day of golf, prizes, and getting to know other homeowners, in the most fantastic setting possible.

It was an incredible day - the weather co-operated and it was sunny and warm all day.

We had a great turnout of residents from our properties in Chilliwack/Sardis: Skynest and Malloway Village, Englewood Courtyard and Englewood Village. With 45 people playing and almost 70 in attendance for the post-tourney dinner, the whole event showcased what a fantastic set of communities we are building with incredible people and amazing spirit. We couldn’t be more proud of our homeowners!

Thank you to Mark Perry and Andrew MacDonald for putting on the event again this year. Everything went perfectly, thanks to the organizational skills of our own Harry Doupe and Roger Jennings!

A HUGE thank you to our amazing sponsors who ensured no team went home empty-handed:

Due to the sale of our previous show home, the sales office at Malloway Village moved into the Gate House a couple of months ago. A new show home will be up and running in 2024 to showcase the remaining Malloway Village inventory.

We’re excited to tell you about it in the next few weeks, and show you photos when it’s ready to go!

Our sales offices will be closed from December 22nd, reopening Jan 6, 2024.

As the leaves begin to change colour, and the breeze carries hints of the upcoming winter season, it’s the time of year when Chilliwack’s harvest seems solely focussed on one vegetable: CORN.

With corn stands and mazes, you can’t avoid corn in the valley at this time of year, and for good reason. Chilliwack’s lush agricultural land gives it the most perfect soil to grow the most delicious corn in the country. While the region boasts of a myriad harvest of fruits and vegetables year-round, its pièce de résistance is undoubtedly the sweet corn to herald the end of summer and the start of fall. There's a certain magic in the air when corn season is at its peak in Chilliwack. Locals and visitors alike throng the roadside stands, and grocery stores throughout the Lower Mainland stock towering boxes of corn for weeks, as people plan the last of their fair-weather barbecues.

But it’s clear that summer 2023 has gone now, and as we gear up to embrace fall, our culinary instincts lean towards cozy, comfort foods. We’ve put together a delicious recipe that fits the bill when it comes to making the most of Chilliwack’s arguably most famous crop. Be sure to try this yummy corn chowder before the season ends!

Sweetcorn Chowder with Smoked Paprika

Ingredients:

4 ears of fresh Chilliwack corn, husked and kernels removed

1 medium onion, finely diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

2 medium potatoes, peeled and diced

4 cups vegetable or chicken broth

1 cup heavy cream or milk

1 tsp smoked paprika

2 tbsp butter or olive oil

Salt and pepper, to taste

Fresh chives or parsley, for garnish

Instructions:

Preparation: Start by prepping your veggies. Using a sharp knife, stand each corn cob upright on a cutting board and slice down its length, removing the kernels. Set aside.

Sauté: In a large pot, melt the butter or heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onions and sauté until translucent. Stir in the garlic and cook for an additional minute.

Corn & Potatoes: Add the corn kernels and diced potatoes to the pot. Stir well, letting the flavors mingle for about 5 minutes.

Broth & Simmer: Pour in the broth, ensuring that the vegetables are submerged. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.

Blend: Once the potatoes are cooked, use an immersion blender to puree half the soup, giving it a creamy texture while still retaining some chunks. If you don't have an immersion blender, transfer half of the soup to a regular blender, blend until smooth, and then return it to the pot.

Season & Finish: Add the heavy cream or milk, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper to the pot. Stir well and let it simmer for another 5 minutes. If the soup is too thick, add a bit more broth or water to reach your desired consistency.

Serve & Garnish: Ladle the chowder into bowls and garnish with freshly chopped chives or parsley. A sprinkle of extra smoked paprika on top adds an extra punch!

E-biking (with the E standing for “electric”) is fast becoming an increasingly popular form of transportation for those who want a little boost on their bike. Having some additional power so you can go faster, more easily go longer distances, and get some help with those hills is understandably a popular idea. As well as people purchasing e-bikes to keep at home, municipal governments in cities across the world are now bringing e-bikes into their per-hour rental bike options, with regular cycle rental and purchase stores doing the same.

This means you can try before you buy or just stick with renting and save yourself a larger initial cost and offset storage/security issues.

Here’s how they work: an electric bike has a motor powered by a detachable, rechargeable battery that helps keep the pedals going and means you have to exert less effort. You set the pace - you can get more or less battery assistance depending on your own preference, and you can make adjustments while you ride. This is especially beneficial for those who need help with the physical challenge of riding or for those with some mobility challenges.

E-bikes are a great way to stay active and fit whilst getting some support so you can explore more of the world around you. Enthusiasts often say they get to go much further than on their regular bikes, so there’s a whole new world to see out there! E-biking is a great solo activity, as a couple, with friends or a biking group, and when the family is visiting. Whether you want to ride around town, explore the countryside, or take a leisurely ride, you can do it all with an electric bike.

If you’re not looking to commit to purchasing an e-bike just yet, there are options for you to rent by the hour. Chilliwack has three great options for you to choose from:

Vedder Mountain Bike Co.

Harrison E-Bike Rental

Walking is one of the simplest and most beneficial forms of exercise. It can help you improve your overall health, boost essential fresh air and Vitamin D, and reduce stress. But for many, becoming a daily walker can be a challenge. Here are some ways in which you can incorporate walking into your everyday life:

1. Set a Goal: Setting daily steps or exercise goals for yourself can be a great way to stay motivated and on track with your walking routine. Choose a goal you can realistically achieve, such as walking for 30 minutes daily, five days a week, or hitting 10,000 steps a day (which is recommended by health professionals). Setting these limits on your phone or a smart watch or fitbit can encourage you to get it done!

2. Track Your Progress: while a watch or phone can set goals for you, using a specific fitness tracker or app to give you a nudge is a great way to ensure you stay on track. They will let you know if you’ve been sat down for too long or push you to move every hour to hit those daily goals. They will give you something to aim for, and many of them reward you for your progress so you stay on track.

3. Start Small: If you’re just starting out, it’s important to start small and work your way up to longer walks. Start with 10-15 minutes a day and gradually increase the duration or even the exertion as you become more comfortable.

4. Find a Walking Partner: Having someone to walk with can make it more enjoyable and help you stay motivated. Find a friend or family member who’s interested in walking with you. If you don’t have a dog, joining a friend on a regular dog walk will help you get out more and gives you a chance to catch up!

5. Wear the Right Gear: Invest in comfortable, supportive shoes, as well as clothing for all seasons - BC is unpredictable weather-wise, but that shouldn’t stop you from getting outside with the right gear.

6. Choose a Variety of Routes: Varying your walking routes can help keep your walks interesting and encourage you to explore new areas.

7. Set Aside Time: Schedule a specific time to devote to walking each day. This will help keep you motivated and make sure you don’t forget to walk.

8. Reward Yourself: Celebrate your successes and reward yourself for reaching your goals. This can be a great incentive to keep up with your walking routine.

As well as the health benefits, walking has been proven to impact your mental health positively. Here are some places to get out and enjoy the fresh air around Chilliwack:

We’ve been experiencing a winter like no other, and after the devastating floods in the Fraser Valley, our local farmers need our help and support like never before. We’ve put together five recipes for cozy comfort foods that use vegetables grown right here in BC during the winter months.

1. Apple-Parsnip Soup

Both apples and parsnips are freshly grown in BC during the winter months. This delicious soup can work as both a starter to a meal, or on its own with some warm crusty bread.

2. Poached Cod with Potatoes and Leeks

Leeks are in season almost all year long, except for spring and early summer. Pair them with some Pacific cod or lingcod, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, balanced winter meal.

3. Cheesy Cabbage Gratin

If mac and cheese is your go-to comfort food, try switching out the carbs for some BC-grown cabbage in this crazy good cheesy sauce. This is as wintery as food gets!

4. Boeuf Bourguignon

It’s a classic one-pot dinner to impress the whole family, but not just that - this hearty meal can be made with entirely locally produced meat and vegetables.

5. Carrot Cake

Save the best for last with this classic sweet treat. Bake it with BC grown carrots for an afternoon snack with a cup of tea, or as a dessert after any of the dishes above.

We hope these recipes keep you warm and cozy throughout winter, and don’t forget to buy local and support our BC farmers and producers whenever you can.

There are so many places to get awesome food in Sardis, that you don’t need to go far to experience great eats just a few minutes away from Malloway Village.

As well as quick solutions for lunch or dinner, there are a number of restaurants on Vedder Road alone, that serve up food from around the world (or closer to home) so you have an incredible variety of places to go with friends or family, or with your new Malloway neighbours!

We’ve made a list of just a small selection of local eateries that have received great reviews online - decide what type of food you want to eat, and grab your coat!

Frankies Italian, 7350 Vedder Rd

Frankie’s Italian is a local staple, and has been serving up great Italian dishes for years. Open for lunch or dinner, this a fantastic location for family get-togethers, a romantic dinner,  or even dinner for one, because the staff will take such good care of you!

As well as a kids menu and more family-friendly dishes, you can enjoy their beef carpaccio and sauteed garlic prawns as part of your sumptuous dinner!

Coconut Thai, #6 - 7355 Vedder Rd

Coconut Thai is one of those gems that serve up delicious food in an unassuming location you might sometimes overlook. The reviews say it all - this is an authentic menu that covers a wealth of Thai cuisine: red curry, soup, pad thai - and it does it really well!

Opening at 10:30am daily, this place is ready to make lunch and dinner for you, and it’s located right across Vedder Road from Frankie’s Italian!

Butter Chicken House, 5669 Vedder Rd

If it’s Indian food you’re craving, look no further than Butter Chicken House, right beside the Royal Canadian Legion. Open seven days a week, this restaurant offers a breakfast menu (it’s open at 11am Monday to Saturday, and Sunday from noon), but at dinner time, you can expect more traditional Indian fare, including of course - BUTTER CHICKEN!

You can also get Butter Chicken House food in the comfort of your Malloway Village home - order ahead to pick up, or go to the food apps to get it delivered right to your door.

Jolly Miller Pub, 5865 Vedder Rd

The Jolly Miller is an institution, and for lunch or dinner, you’ll find locals and others alike enjoying this cozy pub atmosphere, with a great range of delicious food to accompany your pint/wine/soft drink.

While you can find traditional burgers and pizzas on the menu, there are also quesadillas, brunch, tacos, pierogies and more - as well as a turkey dinner around the festive period!

The Jolly Miller is a great place to socialize and meet new people as well, with themed nights and special offers on food and drink, depending on the day of the week.

We’re excited to tell you about it in the next few weeks, and show you photos when it’s ready to go!

Our sales offices will be closed from December 22nd, reopening Jan 6, 2024.
