It’s our favourite time in the valley! As the crisp autumn air settles over Chilliwack, there's no better time to gather your loved ones around the table for a hearty, homemade meal. Cooking with fresh, local ingredients not only supports our community's farmers but also provides our families with the most nutritious and flavorful dishes possible.
Here in the Fraser Valley, we're blessed with an abundance of fall produce, perfect for creating comforting meals that warm both body and soul. By choosing seasonal ingredients, we're not only reducing our carbon footprint but also teaching our children the importance of connecting with nature and what our land produces.
While the Okanagan is known for being the largest producer of BC’s apples, Chilliwack also harvests an abundance of apples this time of year, and those are the ones I use to bake delicious apple pies throughout the season
Chilliwack's Best Fall Apple Pie
**Ingredients:**
- 6 cups thinly sliced local apples
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons local butter
- Pastry for two-crust 9-inch pie
**Method:**
1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
2. In a large bowl, mix sliced apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg[7].
3. Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry. Fill with apple mixture and dot with butter[7].
4. Cover with top crust, seal edges, and cut slits for steam to escape[7].
5. Bake for 50 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly[7].
As you savour each bite of this homemade pie, remember that you're not just feeding your family – you're nourishing their bodies and souls, creating traditions, and strengthening bonds that will last a lifetime - what’s more Canadian than apple pie?! So gather your loved ones, roll up your sleeves, and let's make some delicious memories together!
